The Simplicity of the Gospel

 _______________

'But that's too simple!'

AN HAS always been fascinated with Spiritual knowledge, and recognized God’s great wisdom and knowledge, wisdom and knowledge that man will never attain to.  Despite this fact, however, man has always tried to reach God according to his own ideas of what God’s wisdom and knowledge is, rather than listening to what God says!

6 Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He Is near:

7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

8 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:6-9

To do this, man has often come up with complicated and secret methods, in order to, somehow, try to equal the great wisdom and knowledge of God.  But, in so-doing, he has missed the very means of salvation!  God’s (and therefore the only) method of salvation is simply to rely on God to do it for us, rather than to try to reach God on our own!  It’s that simple!

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

I Cor. 1:18-31

Our difficulty comes, and our assurance of salvation is lost, therefore, when we seek a more complicated method of salvation.  If we can’t fully accept that God’s means of salvation is so simple as to be merely trusting in Him for it, we will doubt our salvation!

3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

2 Corinthians 11:3 -4

Our salvation comes down to two points, and two points alone: i) believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and, ii) repent of your sins and believe in Jesus Christ as your Saviour from your sins:

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

I Cor. 2:1-2

6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He Is, and that He Is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Heb. 11: 6

Salvation is an act of humility and simple faith.  That is the key to God: man has always attempted to come to God on man’s own terms, terms that take pride in attaining a Spiritual knowledge and holiness that would please God.  God, however, takes the focus off man, and onto Himself!  There is therefore no pride possible in attaining God’s salvation!  God’s salvation simply says: “Believe on Me, and My work for you!”  A child can believe that; why can’t we?

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

Matt. 11:25

17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

Luke 18:17

12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

II Cor. 1:12
